02 Feb 12 Valentine’s Day deal offered at Solano County Animal Shelter
With Valentine’s Day around the corner, residents are being asked to perform the ultimate act of love by giving a home to one of the hundreds of pets that have poured into Solano County shelters and are waiting to be adopted.
To help make that task even easier, the Solano County Animal Shelter is taking half off all of its pet adoption fees from Feb. 7 to 14, said manager Ron Whitefield, who has spent the last 8 1/2 years working at the shelter.
While the normal adoption fee for dogs is $95 and around $40 to add a new friendly feline to your family, community members will have the opportunity to find the perfect pet for them at a fraction of the cost, Whitefield said. Adoption fees also include spaying or neutering the animal, as well as all vaccinations and microchipping.
“That’s a lot for the money, it really is,” Whitefield said.
The “Won’t you Be my Valentine” adoption event is just one of many events the shelter has put on to try to increase adoption numbers, including a December deal that paired senior cats and dogs to senior citizens for free.
“We try to do as much as possible to try to get as many cats and dogs back into the community,” he said.
Because of limited space, staff members are working to find good homes for the approximately 150 dogs and 150 cats being housed at the shelter.
“We’ve been at capacity for the last six months,” Whitefield said, adding that an average of 10,000 animals — 4,500 dogs and 5,500 cats — pass through the shelter each year.
After a pet arrives at the shelter, Whitefield said, they are placed on a four-day hold, or “stray period,” to give their owner a chance to claim them. if no owner appears, they are then evaluated by staff to determine their adaptability in terms of food, animal or people aggression, and whether they would be suited to be placed in a home with children.
“We try to fit the dog to the family and the family to the dog,” he said.
Whitefield added that if they receive a dog that seems to be a good pet but has some issues, such as being hyper or a little too “high strung,” the shelter attempts to contact a rescue agency with people who can work with the animal on a daily basis and “help them on their manners” — such is the case of a Dalmatian and pit bull that found themselves in the shelter following a murder-suicide on Arroyo Court in Vacaville nearly two weeks ago. Whitefield said a rescue organization has agreed to take on the Dalmatian, Oreo, but the shelter is still in the process of finding a rescue to take on the pit bull — which, he said, can be a challenge because of the breed’s reputation.
“Pit bulls make good pets if they’re trained properly and taken care of,” he said.
According to Whitefield, there are some instances in which animals coming into the shelter are unable to adapt to the confinement of a kennel and “buckle under the strain.” As a municipal county shelter, the Solano County Animal Shelter sometimes finds itself in the position of having to euthanize an animal if it is determined to be unadoptable and has been there for too long, Whitefield said.
“Usually, if they’re good dogs, we’ll hold them until they are adopted,” he added. “We’ve been very fortunate in getting a lot of the animals in and out of the shelter.”
Adoption is open to the public and, after filling out a one-page application, they have the option of taking on of the shelter’s dogs, cats, birds, rabbits or other animals out for a brief “meet and greet,” Whitefield said.
“With the economy and so many home foreclosures, so many people have had to surrender their animals — good pets,” Whitefield added.
If a person doesn’t find the perfect pet on their first trip to the shelter, Whitefield said not to get discouraged. With a turnaround of nearly 15 dogs and 16 cats coming to the shelter each day, Whitefield said they could meet an entirely different group of animals in three or four days.
“Shelter animals are good animals, they were just put in a bad situation,” he said.
