SANTA CRUZ as the owner of Sunrise Cleaning Service since 1999, Tracy Taylor had come across a number of clients that might fit a description of a hoarder.
So, when she received a phone call in early December from a staff member of the A&E reality show “Hoarders” asking if her business could provide cleaning services for a household in an upcoming episode, Taylor responded in the affirmative.
On Monday at 9 p.m., Taylor and four other members of her staff may be seen on the show’s most recent episode, “Verna/JoAnne.” the five cleaned three rooms for five hours on Dec. 21 for an individual that Taylor could only describe as a “California woman,” although the episode description on the A&E site characterized Verna as “a hot-headed ex-cop, ex-drug trafficker, and ex-prison inmate who has cleverly evaded laws…”
“We’re not allowed to talk about the person or the location in any way,” said Taylor, who had seen the show before her participation. “I know that the show only uses first names.
“The show had counselors and therapists on hand,” Taylor said. “I thought it was very well done in regards to the help and counseling the people got to work with when emotions started to run high. the people involved with the show have a great integrity in how they are putting the show forward.”
It is not the first time Santa Cruz County has been associated with “Hoarders,” which was nominated for an Emmy Award for Outstanding Reality Program in 2011. a Boulder Creek man was featured in an episode that aired in July.
“Hoarding is an excessive accumulation of personal possessions that reaches a point that inhibits the hoarder from living normally,” said Dr. Offra Gerstein, a clinical psychologist in practice for more than 30 years. “For instance, if someone is living in an apartment, they may have stuff filling all of the rooms almost to the ceiling with an exception of a small, narrow path that allows them to enter or exit the room. if they have yards or land, every inch will be covered.”
In addition to her practice, Gerstein pens the Sentinel’s Sunday column, “Relationship Matters.” she wrote about hoarding in a December 2009 column in which she stated: “In the past, compulsive hoarding has been assumed to be a subtype of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Yet, it is not listed as a sub-category in the “Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders” (DSM-IV), nor does it appear to be as receptive to psychotropic medications and cognitive behavioral treatments effectively used with many patients with OCD.”
Taylor, who described her business as a “nontoxic, environmentally friendly cleaning service that services both residential and commercial properties,” elected not to use the word “hoarder” to describe the 20 or so previous clients she had worked for that might fit the definition. Instead, she focused on the services she provided, which she described as a “purge and clean.”
In the case of the upcoming episode, Taylor and her staff entered the household to clean after the show’s staff had done the purge.
“It was a very satisfying experience for our staff,” Taylor said. “One of the rooms we cleaned had a lot of things piled up in front of a nice window. we took all of the stuff down, cleaned it and arranged it so she could see out her window.
“We were able to go in and be a help to someone who needed our help,” she said.

Sitting at home as I count the years gone by.
I’m surrounded by memories that bring tears to my eyes.
But everythings different now, something has changed.
These walls that I used to call home feel like a cage.
And you can walk into the room and I would see you there.
The love that used to be now has me scared.
Tell me why am I lonely tonight
When your arms are here holding me tight.
Baby tell me
Tell my why do I sleep alone tonight
Oh baby tell my am I lonely tonight,
Sitting alone as I wonder what went wrong
Time has come for us to just move on
Living like strangers has no place in my heart
Your unspoken words has left us drifted apart
Now you could walk into the room and I wouldn’t even care.
The love that used to be, who ever said love was fair.
Tell me why am I lonely tonight
When your arms are here holding me tight.
Baby tell me
Tell my why do I sleep alone tonight
Oh baby tell my am I lonely tonight,
Tell me why am I lonely tonight
When your arms are here holding me tight.
Baby tell me
Tell my why do I sleep alone tonight
Oh baby tell my am I lonely tonight
